Dr. Tutu’s extensive scholarly portfolio focuses on population health, global migration, and human–environment interactions. His research is primarily concerned with health literacy and urban environments, with specific emphasis on understanding issues of informality, marginality, and water access.
His high-impact work has been published in numerous leading peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Journal of Infections and Public Health, Habitat International, GeoJournal, and Emotion, Space and Society. He contributes to the field by serving as a reviewer for key publications like Social Science and Medicine, BMC Public Health, Journal of International Migration and Integration, BMC Health Services, and PLOS ONE.
A dedicated leader and expert, Dr. Tutu is a four-time advisory panelist for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and previously served for six years on the board of the Africa Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG).
His research has secured prestigious funding from major organizations, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), alongside programmatic grants from the United States Institute of Peace and the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services.
Dr. Tutu holds a Ph.D. in Geography from The Pennsylvania State University and an M.Phil. in Population Studies from the University of Ghana.
