An Inside Look at a Literacy Delaware Adult Literacy Class

AmeriCorps member Melissa Johnson has been teaching classes for Literacy Delaware for several years. Over this time she has made some observations about her experience.

"Our ESL classes are more than just a place to learn English — they are a space for growth, courage, connection, and community. Each student in our program has demonstrated a strong commitment to learning, showing up consistently, and pushing through challenges with determination and heart.

Learning a new language takes bravery. It requires stepping outside of comfort zones, practicing in front of others, and believing in yourself even when it feels difficult. Our students have made tremendous strides in developing their English skills — from reading and speaking to engaging in meaningful conversations with growing confidence.

What makes our ESL classes truly special is the bond that has formed among the learners. They encourage one another, celebrate each other’s progress, and step in to support when someone needs help. There is laughter in our lessons, joy in our conversations, and a shared understanding that we are growing together.

Sometimes during class, we also learn basic words in our learners’ different languages. It is a beautiful reminder that while we are learning English, we also honor and celebrate the languages and cultures each student brings into the room. When we say goodbye, we often practice saying “See you tomorrow” in different languages:

Spanish: Hasta mañana

Arabic: أراك غدًا (Arāk ghadān)

French: À demain

I truly enjoy watching this community flourish. We have fun learning together, and that positive energy creates a safe and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. Together, we are not just learning English — we are building confidence, friendships, and brighter futures."

Here's what Melissa's learners say after being in her class:

"I can communicate with other people, I can visit the hospital for a medical consultation and I understand a little more, in my job I am a production supervisor. It's my new job and I can read production orders in English."

"I want to express my deep gratitude for the opportunity I've had to be part of Literacy Delaware. When I began my English studies, I knew I was facing a huge challenge, but I never imagined how much I would grow in the process."

"I've learned so much more than a language. I've gained confidence, met wonderful people, and discovered abilities within myself that I perhaps didn't know I had. Every class, every new word, every conversation have been small achievements that I deeply value today.

"I am happy with my development at this moment, I know that I have more to learn but since starting to now, I have learned many new words. Before, It was very difficult for me to understand short sentences, conversations, or simply respond to other people."
