AmeriCorps, Literacy Delaware, and United Way Celebrates 30 Years of MLK Day Through Service
Volunteers promote literacy and King’s promise for peace through reading to elementary students at Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy in honor of Dr. King’s Legacy

AmeriCorps members from Literacy Delaware stepped up to serve on Thursday, January 16, 2025, to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King by promoting literacy within the community while celebrating the 30th anniversary of the National Day of Service. In partnership with United Way’s Reading Angels program members read age-appropriate books to young learners focusing on the life of Dr. King, joining hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and improve their communities.

For 30 years, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact has increased as more Americans embrace the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving the communities where we live, work, and play. As we strive to fulfill Dr. King’s dream of creating the Beloved Community, AmeriCorps remains committed to showing that joining together in service can unify Americans to transform communities through a fierce urgency of now.

“Today we answer Dr. King’s call to serve and are making a difference in the learning community of Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy,” said Leslie McGowan, the Director of Operations from Literacy Delaware.
